Express yourself!

Have you always wanted to let Team Rockwood know just what you were thinking? Do you wonder why the panels of the strip are laid out horizontally instead of vertically? Or do you have sensitive documents that will bring down the government? In any case, we want to know! Just fill out your name and e-mail address, then let 'er rip! No question or comment is too bizarre for Team Rockwood to take a stab at, and if we can get enough mail coming in, this page will be updated weekly! (Unlike the old mailbag page, which got updated about four times in two years.)

So consider this an experiment in web interactivity. Or, consider it a way to artificially inflate our hit count. Either way, just write in!

November 30, 2005,

You don't care about what I'm going to rant about and that's fine with me. I'm going to rant anyway.

There is only one Solar System. There are plenty of other star systems, but only one "Solar" system. The proper name for our sun is Sol. Thus, the planetary system around it is Solar. Other star systems would be the Denebian System around Deneb, the Vegan System around Vega, or the Epsilon Iridani System around Epsilon Iridani.

At this point you should picture my arms flailing about like Kermit the Frog having a tantrums while I scream "Stop calling them solar systems!"

Ok, I'm done. You can go back to ignoring me now.

--Doug Wise

p.s. Love the comic, keep it up.

Well, technically, you're correct, Doug. The actual name for these entities should be planetary systems, not "solar systems."

However, in much the same way that everyone calls facial tissues "Kleenex," it turns out that "solar system" now has an alternate definition that is a little more lenient.

We suspect you're fighting a losing battle. You could hope to decimate your opponents, except then you'd only be killing one out of every ten of them. Because, you see, the original definition for decimate is to kill one in every ten of. Think "deci-" like the metric system and that one-tenth reference will make a little more sense.

So, good luck fighting for proper usage, but we think if scientists are already calling extrasolar systems "solar systems," you've got a long fight on your hands.

December 5, 2005,

Out of curiosity, will Martin Luther King, Jr. Day be on the correct day this year? At least on your calendar?

--Mal

Oh Mal, we were right last year! Of course, we were wrong last year, too. The problem was not that we missed Martin Luther King's birthday, it was that we included it twice: Once correctly in January, then again-- incorrectly-- in April. We'd love to say that we did it just to see who was paying attention, but the truth is we just screwed up.

But to answer your question, no, we won't be screwing it up again this year. Team Rockwood spellcheckers are working overtime on the 2006 Rockwood Calendar to make sure that everything is just perrfekkt.

Thankz fore askinng!
