Exploring the world of comic strips through vague Japanese poetry.

May 23, 2002

The content on this page is solely created by you, the viewers, so if you want to see more, you'll have to contribute something yourself.

  1. Haikus are a form of poetry that consists of three lines with five, seven, then five syllables on each respective line. For example...

Rockwood is in space (5 syllables)
On a circular station (7 syllables)
Looking down on Earth (5 syllables)

Obviously, that's pretty boring, but technically correct. Try to do more than just count syllables. Be creative!

  2. The haiku you submit doesn't necessarily have to have Rockwood mentioned in it, but it would be nice if it related to something in the site somehow, whether it be space-related or just pertaining to a topic brought up elsewhere.

On with the haikus!

Haiku number one starts us off on a whimsical note, y'all...

How random: A Southern Haiku

A southern haiku
takes more art than the standard:
southern syllables

draw themselves out for
ages compared to their weak
northern counterparts.

We say more with "y'all"
than you can with "all yous guys;"
it just takes longer

Things are diff'rent here --
Speaking. Moving. The heat makes
life syrup: Slow. Sweet.

~Q.

Haiku number two tells of the disadvantages of getting away from it all...

Living in a small northern town, with no cinema, is proving, for the first time, to be a problem. There have been too many good flicks out in the last six months. I express my anguish thusly:

Patience I must have
No theater in this town
How will I see all?

--Christopher Gleeson

The Force is strong in haiku number three as it earns the Haiku of the Week...

Broke the bank, they did.
Records beaten, they have done.
Their money, I want.

Summer blockbusters,
Money blown at theater,
Wait in line, I did.

Twenty-0-3 comes,
Darth shows his black mask again.
Jar-jar will be dead.

Rockwood likes Haikus,
This one does not make much sense,
Inspiration lost.

--Leif
