April 7, 2009,
So, this new computerized font apparently
isn't an April Fool's joke... ugh. I'm sure it makes your job easier
(and I know this isn't your *job* either, which no doubt makes automating
part of it appealing), but you do realize it's awful-looking, right?
Hand lettering is where it's at!

We're just happy someone noticed, Robert. Yes, you are correct. We are
now using a font of our own creation, modeled somewhat accurately
on Brian's handwriting. But we're doing that for a good reason. What
you don't know is that the April
Fool's Day strip was the last Rockwood drawn
on dead tree. We've made the jump to a Wacom
graphics tablet to see if we like it as much as pen-on-paper.
So far, like you, we're not thrilled
with the font, but our hand-lettering looks even worse on the pad
(turns out it's NOT just like writing on paper). So for the time
being, we're all just going to have to put up with legibility over
beauty. But rest assured, we're working on it. Soon we'll either
have a better font or get better at hand-lettering. With any luck,
you won't be able to tell the difference.
Or, in the end, maybe it will turn out we
like killing trees for our art after all and none of this will matter
as we revert to our old ways. It's an experiment in cartooning! Thanks
for coming along with us as we try to figure it out.
